LABOUR LAW
The Employment and Industrial Relations Act (“EIRA”), enacted in 2002, consolidated the provisions of two separate statutes which formerly regulated industrial relations and conditions of employment respectively. Besides consolidating the previous statutory provisions, the EIRA was also intended to bring Maltese labour law in line with all applicable European Union Directives and is further underpinned by related statutes such as the Occupational Health and Safety Authority Act and the Equality for Men and Women Act.
Within the framework of these principal legal instruments, the substantive legal provisions have been promulgated through subsidiary legislation addressing specific issues, particularly in the areas pertaining to conditions of employment and health and safety issues.
